Stone of the Month:
March 2018
"In Space and Time"

This jet-black Kamo River landscape stone has all the qualities of an excellent Japanese Suiseki and is beautifully complemented by a skillfully carved hardwood base. It has passed from one important stone collector to another during its history. It was reportedly in the collection of the late Japanese collector Sugii Chugi who assigned the number 2117 to this stone. After Sugii’s death, the stone passed into the hands of Matsuura Arishige, former president of the Nippon Suiseki Association. Matsuura illustrated it on page 79 of his book An Introduction to Suiseki published in 2010. A year later, Matsuura displayed it at the 2011 European Suiseki Association exhibition in Ratinger, Germany. This stone was exhibited two years later in another European exhibit. It remained in a privately held collection for several years before it passed into the hands of the another European connoisseur of Japanese stones.

It was named “In Space and Time” because it has travelled many times and will likely travel further as it is exhibited in the future. This stone is 26.5 cm wide, 11.5 cm deep and 9.0 cm high including the base.
