Five states in Northwest Malaysia — Kedah, Perlis, Penang, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan — account for most of the stones, with some coming from Kuala Lumpur. Many of the stone collectors are located in West Malaysia. Collecting began in the late 1980s and slowly spread from Kuala Lumpur to the four states in northwestern Malaysia.
