Stone of the Month:
July 2020
"Discovery"

By Richard Turner

This display alludes to the moment of discovery and that oft-repeated gesture of picking up a stone and holding it out at eye level as we examine it for the first time. Shall I keep it or leave it right where I found it? This moment may be the first of many times that we hold the stone and scrutinize it as we consider how to display it. The Indian Blanket stone in this display has been cleaned and polished. It is not in the condition that it would be in the field. As a stone that has been “processed”; it hints at a future life displayed on a custom-made base and becomes a commodity passed from hand to hand. The life of a viewing stone, from discovery through exhibition, is implied in this display.
