These hornstone (hornfel) rocks originated in the Zhitomir region of northwestern Ukraine. There is a thin whitish layer covering a darker stone. They are a fine-grained metamorphic rock that formed when clay-based rocks were subject to extreme heat. They are hard, durable stones. These images were submitted by Ivan Shevchuk.
