Gobi Desert, Grape Agate

Grape agates are composed primarily of silica formed in rounded clusters. These rare formations occur in volcanic rocks, often in cracks or cavities within old volcanic cones or other rocks with volcanic intrusions. They are mined from mountains in northern Inner Mongolia. They are very hard, 6.5 to 7 degree on the Moh scale and trace levels of impurities add color to these stones.
