Kamuikotan

Kamuikotan, Hokkaido Prefecture

Kamuikotan is an area in central Hokkaido where the Ainu people believe that the God of the Devil lived. The Ishikari River, the longest river in Hokkaido and the source of many fine stones, runs rapidly through a deep valley in the Kamuikotan area. Many of the Kamuikotan stones are black, hard and develop beautiful patinas which are highly prized by Japanese collectors.
