This base, which is made from scraps of wood, functions more like a suiban than a daiza in that it can be used to display different stones rather than being tailor-made for the presentation of a single stone. Just as one looks for a harmonious relationship between the color, size, and shape of the suiban and those same qualities in the stone, so here, a careful selection of the stone is important. Stones that work best with this base may share the tones of the wood scraps, may be angular like the base itself, or may have a texture that suggests wood grain or tree bark.
