This Chinese yellow wax stone is paired with a model of a classic mid-century modern molded fiberglass lounge chair. The softly curving silhouettes of the stone and the chair respond harmoniously to one another. The chair “gestures” towards the stone, the stone “recoils” from the chair. The relation of the two monochromatic, smoothly finished objects is given an added dimension by the figurative quality of the yellow wax stone and by the fact that the void in the chair resembles the holes found in certain types of prized Chinese stones. The lacquered panel behind the chair subtly suggests an architectural setting. Is the stone a sleek abstract sculpture in the home of a wealthy connoisseur?
