Structure stones are typically formed when younger iron oxide rich silt and mud accumulated on and around older generally rounded stones to eventually form a layer of brownish to nearly black softer stone. The best structure stones have both types present, although the older stone is sometimes lost when the outer layer of stone only partially covers the older stone allowing it to fall out. These are removed from the earth and are extensively cleaned.
